Maintenance Technician

DUDLEY, United Kingdom

RLR makes refractory products for the steel industry and other high-temperature users, from our site in Dudley. We're looking for a Maintenance Technician to support the Maintenance Engineer and Maintenance Manager with the day-to-day upkeep of our plant and equipment.

This is a hands-on role. You'll be fixing things, inspecting equipment, and keeping machinery running across a working manufacturing site. Expect dusty, noisy and hot areas as part of the job.

You'll work mainly on mechanical tasks — motors, gearboxes, bearings, conveyors — with some basic electrical fault-finding where you're trained and authorised to do it.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance on plant and equipment to schedule
  • Carry out routine mechanical repairs and help with breakdowns
  • Assist with basic electrical fault-finding on motors, switches, sensors and controls
  • Replace worn or damaged parts and help return equipment safely to service
  • Complete inspections and keep accurate maintenance records
  • Follow safe isolation, lock-off and permit procedures for all work
  • Report hazards, defects and recurring faults promptly
  • Keep maintenance and production areas tidy and safe

Must Have

  • Forklift or MEWP certificate
  • At least 3 years in an industrial maintenance or manufacturing role
  • Experience with motors, gearboxes, bearings and conveyors
  • Experience using planned preventative maintenance systems
  • Basic electrical knowledge — motors, switches, sensors, control systems
  • Confident and safe using hand tools and power tools
  • Understanding of safe isolation and other Health & Safety procedures
  • Willing to work at height and in confined spaces when trained to do so

Nice to have

  • NVQ or City & Guilds Level 2 or 3 in a mechanical or electrical discipline
  • 17th or 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  • Further electrical fault-finding experience
  • In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (PAT testing)
  • Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Experience in refractories, ceramics, foundries or similar heavy industry
  • Welding and fabrication skills

What's great in the job?

  • Varied work – mixers, conveyors, motors, gearboxes, silos, burners and hoists, not one machine all day
  • Team support – you work alongside a Maintenance Engineer and report to a Maintenance Manager, not on your own
  • Steady employer – an established, independent UK manufacturer based in Dudley
  • Permanent role – full-time hours with some flexibility and overtime available
  • Practical scope – mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic work, plus some fabrication where trained
